I'm alive!

No I'm not dead...

Work duties kept me from my sketchpad for weeks, and endless storyboards soured the prospect of drawing to the point that I didn't quite find anything funny anymore.

But I have since completed my 12-page entry to the 3rd Philippine Graphic Fiction Awards at Fully Booked, so I am primed and ready for another slew of stilted cartoon humor for this blog.

I'll see if I can squeak a cartoon or two into the blog in the next coupla weeks.

Thanks for hanging around patiently till I came to my senses.

The Godfather of Comedy Passes On...

Shocked to hear that George Carlin passed away today. He was the godfather of all standups, made like 20+ comedy albums of original material and did not abandon the stage till the very end. Many humorists and comics cite him as their inspiration and role-model. His fearless way of exposing the dirty underbelly of society with wordplay and wit will be a source of laughs for many decades to come.

If you haven't already heard his stand-up, it's definitely worth a look.

Updates...

Been slow on the posts as of late, drawing so many storyboards at the office it's hard to get to the panels when I get home. And almost 50 strips in, it's getting more challenging to find good material, because most of the things that annoy me I've attacked already. Haha.

49 strips! I'm hitting the big 5-0 with the next one. Keep it steady, man.

Sketch #11 - Canoy's Tagaytay Getaway

Ikey invited us over to Tagaytay for the weekend to stay at his folks' house... It was a relaxing trip, and I was so inspired by Tita Desi's garden grown into the fiber of their home that I chose to draw part of their entrance for my practice with inking plants... It gave me a A LOT of practice on plants, as you can see.

Sketch #10 - Nipa Hut

Been admiring Lat's work---he's a famous Malaysian cartoonist, most know for making Kampung Boy, a semi-autobiographical cartoon-memoir. The way he uses ink is unbelievable... I love the way he chooses to use solid blacks as a focal points in his mostly black and white illustrations. This sketch is mostly a riff off his work, by imitating him I hope to learn a little about the way he uses inks so well.

Sketch #9 - Messenger

It's been a long time since I've posted any of my sketches, so I thought I'd try and fix that with some excerpts from aimless doodles. I had some excess ink in a bottlecap and decided to try drawing straight from the brush and it turned out to be some kinda revolutionary from the turn of the century....

Butil #38 - The Gifts of Sight

I made a mistake posting the cartoon below, and as a result, you guys were stuck with an old James Bond caricature for a week. Apologies---here is the actual cartoon for Butil #38. Enjoy.

Sketch #8 - Homefront on the Street

Here's something I toddled off while bored at a shoot. It's actually partially the exterior of my officemate's streetside neighbor, which i found particularly picturesque at 5am.

Sketch #7 - Jose Rizal

Here's something i doodled off as my brushpen cartridge was low on ink... a little impression of our national hero. It'd be nice to do a little story project on 1896. Maybe I should think about that...
